Why do some "playboys" exhibit real emotional issues?

I had a friend who I thought was cool. He came off as a pick up artist , so i figured ok we are going to be getting fine women and have fun...But I soon learned this guy has some real issues like , hitting his girlfriends, falling in love with 17yr olds and It kind of saddens me but he was not the only so called "playboy" I have seen who turned out to be a incredibly broken male...Could it be that this whole "playboy" facade is just an illusion?
