Why can the courts overturn propositions that were democratically decided on?

Because we live in a federal republic and the rule of law always trumps the rule of the majority. The majority can oppress minorities by voting and in the republican system of government, every ones rights are protected even if the majority wants to take them away. That is why we saw that segregation was wrong and ended it even though the majority wanted it.
