What is Hawthorne's purpose in the Scarlet Letter?

I'm not sure what Hawthorne's purpose is... I think it has to do with revealing that all humanity consists of a dark side and to show how sin has differing effecfts in life, but I'm not sure if I'm really hitting the right mark... any suggestions would be wonderful!
